What this is, and why it exists

Nikkilog is a personal anime diary — a quiet place to keep a record of what you watch, rate it, and note how it made you feel. It is run by one person, as a hobby, and it is not a business.

Why it exists

Three honest reasons, in the order they became true.

It replaced a spreadsheet. Keeping track of what you have watched, how far in you are, and what you thought of it, in a spreadsheet, stops working somewhere around the hundredth entry. This is that spreadsheet, with a proper interface.

It is a learning project. Nikkilog was built to learn full-stack web development from scratch — the database, the server, the authentication, the design. It is now being deployed publicly to learn how search engines and the open web actually work, which is a different skill entirely and cannot be learned on localhost.

It asks a question other trackers do not. Most trackers record what you watched. Nikkilog also records how it felt — calm, thrilling, emotional, nostalgic — and turns those answers into browsable lists. That data does not exist anywhere else, because no one else asked for it.

What this is not

Where the data comes from

Being straight about this, because it matters.

The catalogue is MyAnimeList's. Anime titles, alternative and Japanese titles, synopses, episode counts, air dates, studios, genres, scores and cover images all originate from MyAnimeList. They remain the property of MyAnimeList and the respective rights holders. Nikkilog claims no ownership over any of it and does not sell it.

Crediting them is not the same as being licensed by them. Saying where the data came from is the honest thing to do, and it is the one use of MyAnimeList's name their own developer agreement permits. It does not, by itself, grant permission to republish their content — that is a separate question, and this project does not claim to have resolved it.

If you hold rights to something shown here and want it removed, it will be — no argument, no form to fill in. See contact below.

The mood data is ours. The answers to "how did this feel?" were given by people using Nikkilog. They were not copied from anywhere, because there is nowhere to copy them from. That is the part of this site that is genuinely original.

How it is built

Node.js, Express, EJS and MySQL, rendered on the server. The source is on GitHub and the design, the browser extension and the mood layer are all described in the repository. No trackers, no analytics scripts, no third-party fonts beyond Google Fonts.
